Fashion isn’t just about clothes; it’s a fundamental form of self-expression and identity. Every day, no matter who or where we are, we consciously choose what to wear before stepping into the world. This choice reflects our identity, story, personality, culture, and individuality—values we invest time and money into.
Take a moment to consider the journey your clothes undergo before and after becoming part of your life. Who made them? Where are they from? What’s the life of the person behind their creation like? What materials are they made from? We often think about skincare and nutrition, yet overlook that our skin—the largest organ—is in constant contact with our clothing. Is your clothing releasing harsh chemicals, toxins, and microplastics onto your skin?
Unfortunately, most fashion items are made with synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and spandex, treated with harsh chemicals for dyeing and printing. They’re often produced in sweatshops or unsafe factories where exploitation is rampant, and they pollute our water every time they’re washed.
Fashion is marketed and promoted to encourage fast, mindless consumption, setting unrealistic beauty standards that can diminish our confidence and self-worth based on clothing size and type. Ultimately, these garments often end up in landfills, polluting the earth for centuries.
While this may seem disheartening, it can also be empowering. By becoming more mindful of our daily choices, our fashion sense can positively impact the lives of those who make our clothes, those who wear them, and the planet itself. Let’s honor our planet and its resources through thoughtful, conscious fashion choices.
With warmth and whimsy,
Scarlett xx
